The History of Christ Church Unity

The Unity movement was founded in 1889 by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore in Kansas City, Missouri. Searching for physical healing for terminal tuberculosis, Myrtle repeated the affirmative prayer, “I am a child of God, therefore, I do not inherit sickness”, and prayed for perfect health for two years. As a result, she was healed.

Charles was healed of injuries that had hampered him since childhood using affirmative prayer as well. As the Fillmores began writing and speaking about their beliefs, the Unity movement was born.

Christ Church Unity founder Carolyn Hightower Reithinger D.D. met Charles Filmore in 1932. She frequently sought his guidance and strength. Rev. Carolyn designed and built the original Christ Church Unity in 1942 in downtown Orlando at the corner of Orange Avenue and Anderson Street.

On one of her trips to Europe, Dr. Reithinger purchased the lovely chandeliers which still hang in our current sanctuary. The columns in the entrance to Hightower Hall also once graced the facade of our original sanctuary.

We relocated to our current spacious campus on Easter of 1999 after out growing the old building. The new building was later dedicated with Unity’s well known poet James Dillet Freeman in attendance.
